Weddings & Civil Parnerships
Under the discerning gaze of Scottish greats the Royal Society of Edinburgh is the perfect place to celebrate your wedding.
If you only want to hold your wedding ceremony we are happy to organise just that for you. If it’s your ceremony plus a reception afterwards we would be delighted to help you celebrate in style, be that a simple drinks reception after your ceremony, a more traditional wedding reception, or perhaps something in between.
Our venue can comfortably accommodate up to 90 people for weddings. Our Scott Room, Upper Gallery, Wellcome East and West rooms are licensed for holding wedding ceremonies. These rooms and our grand reception area are also best for any reception after the ceremony. For larger receptions the Wellcome West room, with its dance floor is best.
And what about keeping the children entertained. Our Theatre is available to show movies while the adults are enjoying the party.
A special anniversary or birthday, your graduation reception or dinner, or other important moments in your life, our rooms are available for such occasions.
The best rooms to use will depend on what and how you wish to celebrate and how many people you want to invite. Our sections on weddings, dinners and drink receptions provide a useful steer on what may be best for your celebration.
If you want to hold a dinner in a historic city centre location with stunning rooms, excellent service and easy access for your guests, we are the perfect place that will impress.
For true historic grandeur we highly recommend having dinner in our Scott or Kelvin Rooms. Our Wellcome East and West rooms are also impressive settings for dinner, and the latter can accommodate the most guests – up to 90 banqueting style. Our James Clerk Maxwell Room and MacRobert Room also provides a perfect, intimate setting for small scale dinners.
If you want to hold a drinks reception in a historic city centre location with stunning rooms, excellent service and easy access for your guests, we are the perfect place that will impress.
Our Wellcome East and West rooms are impressive settings and highly recommended for a reception. Together they can accommodate 200 people. For true historic grandeur our Scott room provides a smaller more intimate setting as does our James Clerk Maxwell room. If you wish your reception to have a more contemporary feel, we recommend our Upper Gallery.
We offer a wide range of rooms which suit all types of corporate, private and public meetings attended by between 2 and 145 people depending on how you want the room set up. Ideally situated in the heart of Edinburgh we offer easy access for your attendees, regardless of where they are coming from.
If you wish a boardroom style our rooms can accommodate up to 35 people. If you wish cabaret style they can accommodate up to 80.
For boardroom style we highly recommend our Scott room, Kelvin room, MacRobert room, James Clerk Maxwell room, Auerbach Room, Upper Gallery, Swann Room and the Wellcome East and West rooms.
For cabaret style the Wellcome West Room can accommodate up to 80 people. Other rooms accommodate 40 people or less cabaret style. We highly recommend the Upper Gallery, Scott Room and Wellcome East Room numbers where your numbers are smaller.
Our mission for more than 200 years has been to advance learning and useful knowledge. We are therefore always delighted to host exhibitions which enable others to see and learn more.
Our setting in the heart of Edinburgh makes it easy for people to visit your exhibition. Its size will depend on the best room to use. Most of our rooms are suitable for small scale exhibitions. If it is a larger scale exhibition, our Wellcome East & West rooms and our Upper and Lower Gallery will suit best.
Our facilities are open all year round and being in the city centre, are at the heart of what goes on within the many Festivals held in Edinburgh each year, such as the International Festival, the Fringe Festival, the Science Festival, the Film Festival, the International Book Festival and Edinburgh’s Christmas.
We may be the venue to hold your exhibition, show or event as part of these Festivals, and would be pleased to discuss this with you.

The Society’s current home is situated in the heart of the Edinburgh New Town and dates back to 1843. It is open for pre-arranged visits by tour groups, which can be tailored according to the interests of a particular group. Tours can also include refreshments, including buffets or served lunches, and dinners can also be provided at an additional cost.
