LSG Responds to Call for Evidence on Teacher Workforce Planning

The Learned Societies’ Group on STEM Education (LSG), hosted by RSE, has responded to the Scottish Parliament’s Education and Skills Committee call for evidence on Teacher Recruitment and Retention. Schools are experiencing significant challenges in the recruitment of specialist teachers in the sciences and mathematics. The LSG firmly believes that there is a need for improved data on teacher shortages and vacancies in Scotland in order to support accurate teacher workforce planning. A range of factors are impacting on STEM teacher recruitment, including people’s perception of the teaching profession, teacher workload, salary levels compared to other sectors and limited career progression.
