The Royal Society of Edinburgh – Its Homes & History

This publication was created using the texts and images assembled for an exhibition presented in the RSE on the occasion of the visit of HRH the Duke of Edinburgh in August 2009. This visit marked the centenary of the Society’s move to its present home in George street, Edinburgh in 1909.

The story told here is of the different homes the Society has occupied since it was founded by Royal Charter in 1783. Against that background, text and picture also tells a little of the story of the Society’s origins in the Scottish Enlightenment, the achievements of some of its many distinguished Fellows and the Society’s continuing evolution in the service of the Scottish public.
