The RSE has responded to the European Commission’s consultation on the development of Framework Programme 9, the successor to Horizon 2020. While Horizon 2020 has undoubtedly strengthened EU research capacity, the RSE has identified improvements that could be made in the next Framework Programme.
With a move towards greater mission-orientated research, the RSE response emphasises the importance of ensuring that increased investment is made in the European Research Council (ERC) in support of fundamental research. We recommend that in order to bridge the research and innovation gap, the Commission should explore whether there is greater scope to create synergies between the ERC and the European Innovation Council. We also highlight the importance of ensuring that the social sciences and humanities are fully embedded in future research programmes as their inputs will be required in order to address major global challenges.
