The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters. Established 1857
Sir Michael Atiyah, University of Edinburgh and Isadore Singer, Massachusetts Institute of Technology were awarded the Abel Prize 2004 "for their discovery and proof of the index theorem, bringing together topology, geometry and analysis, and their outstanding role in building new bridges between mathematics and theoretical physics", to quote the Abel Committee's citation. This is the mathematical equivalent to the Nobel Prize. From October 2005, Sir Michael Atiyah becomes President of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.
Bilateral activities - The Royal Society of Edinburgh is pleased to announce that it signed an informal agreement with the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters in September 2005 in Edinburgh which marks the beginning of increased collaboration between the two national academies and the research communities in their respective countries. There are many areas of common interest bearing in mind our cultures, history and geography and we are looking forward to working with our Norwegian colleagues on joint activities in the years to follow. Please check the main RSE events pages for relevant events being organised.
Under this informal agreement, there is no provision for Bilateral, cost-sharing exchanges. However, when available, applications through the Open Programme are welcome.
The Royal Society of Edinburgh is pleased to be able to support a forthcoming Norway-Scotland Symposia on Internal Waves (14-15 October 2008), hosted under the auspices of the agreement between The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters and The Royal Society of Edinburgh. Full details of the symposia are available here
