International Programme

Devolution has led to Scotland being seen differently in an international context and has stimulated considerable overseas interest in developing a relationship with Scotland. As a result of this the Society has sought to increase and strengthen its international role. Its key focus has been, and will continue to be, on outcomes that help deliver a Scotland that does not operate in isolation from the international community, but is linked to and collaborates with it - a key aim of the Scottish Science Strategy.

The RSE has established a Committee on International links, to take forward the commitment to establish stronger international links.

The four main objectives of the Society’s international policy are:

- To promote knowledge of the Society and visibility of the Fellowship overseas, through initiatives such as the RSE’s increasing interaction and co-operation with the British Council.
- To interact with and run joint activities with selected overseas academies.
- To facilitate international exchange programmes that enable increased international contact and collaboration between Scottish and overseas researchers and scholars.
- To provide a forum for discussion of international developments in science, arts, letters, the professions, technology, industry and commerce.
