The RMS Titanic was compliant with all the applicable standards and codes of its day - but was it a safe ship? How can we ensure that we are not buiding more 'Titanics' today?

Regulatory tests, such as the Single Burning Item test (SBI), are driven by both technical and political processes. Breakdowns in the process can lead to disasters such as the Kaprun ski train fire, the Mont Blanc tunnel fire and possibly the Buncefield disaster.

Registration and call for poster presentations

A one-day meeting which brings together leading speakers from the worlds of both art and science. It is to be held at the James Clerk Maxwell Science Centre, Edinburgh Academy (Maxwell’s school), followed by a reception at Maxwell’s birthplace, 14 India Street. Click here to view programme.

In addition to the oral presentations there will be posters from visual artists, designers and scientists, describing their work.

Those wishing to make a poster presentation or to just register for attending the meeting should contact the conference secretary Leanne O'Donnell Tel 0131 651 7067 or alternatively Clive Greated. The registration fee is £35, including lunch, refreshments and reception.

A feature of the meeting is that summaries of the posters will be published, together with the papers for the oral presentations, in a full colour special issue of the journal Design and Nature. Assistance may be given with the preparation of posters if required.

James Clerk Maxwell 175th Anniversary - Maxwell Year 2006

The RSE, together with a wide-range of organisations celebrated the 175th anniversary of the birth of James Clerk Maxwell, which fell in June 2006, helping to raise the profile in Scotland of Clerk Maxwell, as one of the World’s greatest scientists.

James Hutton 280th Anniversary - June 2006

James Hutton, a Founding Fellow of the RSE and 'Father of Modern Geology' was born 3 June 1726, but, through the adoption of the Gregorian calendar, his birthday jumped to June 14.

The RSE's connection with Hutton is very significant indeed as The History of The Royal Society of Edinburgh relates:

It is a matter of conjecture whether or not Hutton's 'Theory of the Earth' would have seen the light of day had the Society not come into being and Playfair's are perhaps pertinent:

'It might have been a long time before Hutton had given anything on this subject ('The Theory of the Earth') to the public, had not his zeal for supporting a recent institution which he thought of importance to the progress of science in his own country induced him to come forward, and to communicate to the Royal Society of Edinburgh a concise account of his theory of the earth.' (Trans., 1805, 5, 51).
