Avian Influenza Working Party

The Society has established a small group of Fellows to examine the implications of the avian influenza threat for Scotland. The emphasis of the exercise is on Scotland and particularly the likely impact on agriculture and countryside activities important for tourism. The intention is not to replicate the recent joint study by the Royal Society of London and the Academy of Medical Sciences which addressed the issue of pandemic influenza in the human population. Membership of the group comprises:

The group has met on 5 occasions, holding useful discussions with the Chief Veterinary Officer and the Chief Medical Officer for Scotland, SEERAD's Animal Health and Welfare Division, Scottish Natural Heritage, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, Professor mark Woolhouse and representatives of the Scottish poultry industry.
